A journalist once defined the magic of Dame Julie Andrews as "...the lady is not just a great star, she is a whirling, dazzling constellation. Julie is not an ordinary movie personality, she is a phenomenon." Coming to America from her native England, Julie Andrews made her Broadway debut at the age of 19 in The Boyfriend. She then went on to create the role of Eliza Doolittle in the production of My Fair Lady and subsequently Guinevere in Camelot. She received an Oscar for Best Actress in her first film, Mary Poppins and was nominated for her performance in The Sound of Music, one of the most successful motion pictures of all time. Her wonderful singing voice, wholesome appeal, natural elegance and sly humor made her a box office draw around the world.
Over the course of her career she has won five Golden Globe Awards, two for being the world''s favorite actress, and one for her performance in the film Victor/Victoria after which she also received her third Oscar nomination) a role she reprised on stage for the Broadway production in 1995 and numerous other honours. She has enjoyed continuing success on the screen in films such as The Princess Diaries (1 and 2) and as the voice of Shrek''s mother-in-law in Shrek 2 and 3. In 2005 she made her debut as a stage director with a revival of The Boyfriend.
She is also the author of children''s books, among them Mandy, her best selling fantasy The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, and more recently, the popular Dumpy the Dump Truck series, Simeon''s Gift, Little Bo and Little Bo in France. In partnership with Harper Collins, she has launched her own publishing imprint, The Julie Andrews Collection, with her daughter and co-author, Emma Walton Hamilton. Among the releases under this banner are Dragon, Hound of Honor and The Legend of Holly Clause (by Brittney Ryan).
Julie Andrews was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the New Year''s Honours List of 2000. She is involved with many charities, including the United Nations International Fund for Women, Operations USA *an international relief agency) and the Foundation for Hereditary Disease. She is married to writer/director Blake Edwards, they have five children and seven grandchildren.
